Background of the Study
Family planning is essential for reducing maternal and child mortality, promoting reproductive health, and empowering women. Adherence to established family planning guidelines is a key component of effective service delivery, ensuring that women receive appropriate and safe contraceptive options (World Health Organization [WHO], 2023). Nurses play a central role in family planning services, providing education, counseling, and contraceptive services to patients.
At Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria, nurses are tasked with implementing family planning guidelines, but adherence to these protocols may vary depending on factors such as training, resource availability, and institutional support. This study seeks to evaluate nurses’ adherence to family planning guidelines at the institution, identifying barriers and providing recommendations for improving service delivery.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the existence of family planning guidelines, there is limited evidence on the extent to which nurses at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital adhere to these protocols. Non-adherence may lead to inconsistent service delivery, reduced patient satisfaction, and negative health outcomes. Addressing these issues is essential for improving the effectiveness of family planning services.
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate nurses’ adherence to family planning guidelines at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria.
2. To identify factors influencing nurses' adherence to family planning protocols.
3. To recommend strategies for improving adherence to family planning guidelines among nurses.
Research Questions
1. To what extent do nurses adhere to family planning guidelines at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital?
2. What factors influence nurses' adherence to family planning protocols?
3. What strategies can improve adherence to family planning guidelines among nurses?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses’ adherence to family planning guidelines at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital is inadequate.
2. Factors such as training, resources, and institutional support influence adherence to family planning guidelines.
3. Implementing targeted strategies can significantly improve adherence to family planning protocols.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on nurses involved in family planning services at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital. It excludes other healthcare professionals and family planning services at different institutions. Limitations include potential bias in self-reported adherence and the challenge of measuring long-term impacts on patient outcomes.
